Your browser is the one that handles almost all the internet activities for you. With the advancement of technology, the world of web browsing also has advanced manifold. This means that that the use and responsibility of your web browser have also increased.

This increased pressure on your web browser sometimes results in the failure of the browser in the form of slowdown, becoming unresponsive, etc. It may be due to the excessive load being put up on the browser. If your browser becomes slow and unresponsive then it becomes very irritating and sometimes time-consuming. Imagine, if you are working on many spreadsheets and online docs, and every 5 mins the browser stops responding due to the load these online doc and PDFs are creating, it will actually take decades for you to complete your work. This might lead to missing of deadlines and can also ruin the flow of your work.

There are a plethora of ways in which you can speed up your web browsing and improve the performance of the browser. Today, we are going to discuss a few of them in detail. We will also learn how to execute the steps in different browsing platforms.

Clear Cache

Your browser stores cache that means certain bits of information in order to make it easy for you to access the websites again. Although cache helps to speed up the process of browsing by knowing about your preferences, it is suggested to clear out the unwanted cache from time to time. Unwanted cache in your system may prove to be a hindrance in your browsing experience.

  • Remove cache from Chrome
  • From the top right corner, click on more.
  • Click more tools from the drop-down menu and then select clear browsing data.
  • Select the box of Cached Images and files.
  • Click on Clear Data.
  • Remove cache from Firefox
  • Click on the top right corner menu.
  • From the history menu, select the option of clear all history.
  • You will be shown a dialog box, select Cache and press Clear Now.

Open as minimum tabs as required

Some people have a tendency to work on a dozen tabs at a time. The more tabs you open, the slower will be your browsing. Having many tabs opened at the same time puts extra load on your browser. As a result, it takes time to open sites and load content. This doesn’t mean that you cannot work on multiple tabs simultaneously. You surely can. Just make sure that those tabs which are not being used and are lying idle should be closed.

Turn off Extensions

Extensions are basically plugins which are used for different purposes. Extensions help you out to serve your requirements. For instance, if you want to check grammar or sentence structure while browsing, you can install an extension to do so. But as you all know, everything comes with its own set of disadvantages. These extensions can also slow down your browsing because it downloads some amount of data in the background. What we can do is make sure that we have not downloaded any extension that is not required by us. This will boost web browsing speed.

1) Disable extensions in Google Chrome browser :

  • Go to the options menu.
  • Select more tools from the drop-down menu.
  • Select Extensions.
  • Delete unnecessary chrome extensions.

2) Disable extensions in Firefox:

  • Click on the menu.
  • Select Add-ons
  • From there, select Extensions. Now disable the extensions you wish to remove.

Remove obsolete bookmarks

We often bookmark a page on the internet to view it later or as and when required. But we forget to delete those bookmarks which are of no further use to us. The increased number of bookmarks harms the browser’s performance. Therefore, we should occasionally clear out bookmarks which are not required anymore.

1) Clear bookmarks from Chrome:

  • Click on the options menu.
  • Select bookmarks and go to bookmark manager.
  • Delete unnecessary bookmarks

2) Clear bookmarks from Firefox:

  • Click bookmarks and select “show all bookmarks.”
  • Delete the bookmarks that you don’t need.

Improve the network

The speed of your browser also largely depends on the speed that your network is providing. It is essential for your network to provide a decent speed so that you don’t face any challenges while opening the web pages. It is desirable to connect to a wired network if possible. If you don’t have one, update your Wi-Fi to a suit your network requirements.

Delete cookies

Cookies are stored in the browser in text format. Websites use cookies to get information to know the preferences of the user and other such information. This helps to enhance the experience of the user.

Delete cookies from Chrome:

  • Click more, then go to more tools.
  • Go to Clear Browsing data.
  • Select the time frame and check the box that says Cookies and other site data.

Reinstall the browser

Re-installing the browser helps you to get rid of all the unwanted data that has been stored, and you don’t have a clue about them. Re-installing also helps you to speed up the browser as it comes in a fresh state.

Watching movies can hinder your speed

Watching movies and other videos play a great role in affecting the speed of your network. It is suggested that videos should be downloaded first and can be viewed later in order to continue with a hassle free fast browsing.

Close all background apps

There are applications which run in the background while we browse through the internet. Many times we don’t get to know about these apps. This also becomes a reason for the slowing of the browsing speed. Closing all the applications that are running in the background can really help to boost the speed.

A fast and effective browser experience is the need of the hour. We live in a fast-paced world where we cannot wait for even a few seconds for our page to load. So, it becomes very necessary for the browser to perform according to our needs.
